Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that corrects crooked teeth and jaws that are positioned incorrectly in relation to one another. It achieves a beautiful, straight and natural smile and the best facial profile. Aside from the reduced aesthetic impact, crooked teeth are harder to keep clean and are thus more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease. Sometimes a poor bite can lead to headaches and problems with the jaw joint.
The best age to assess the orthodontic situation of a child is from 5 years onwards. Some conditions are best treated at a young age but the majority of fixed bracket orthodontic treatment (braces) happens once all adult teeth are through. If you call or visit us we can offer more advice specific to you or your child’s teeth.
Types of orthodontic treatments:
- Traditional bracket – fixed bracket and wire braces
Invisalign Braces – a series of clear overlay templates, called aligners, generated by computer simulation to gradually move the teeth. This system is available to adult patients with certain orthodontic bite problems – your dentist will be happy to advise as to whether you may be a suitable candidate.
- Myofunctional – myobrace system.
Treatment time varies depending on age, patient compliance and the severity of the condition – generally, it takes between 18 and 36 months. You will need to come in once a month for your brace to be adjusted, or the next aligner fitted to keep your teeth moving in the right direction.
